Quarantine has made people do some really crazy things. I’m already a hermit so if we’re being honest, my life hasn’t changed too much. I was working at home for months before the Great Quarantines of 2020 began. However, there is one thing I desperately needed that I couldn’t get during quarantine.
A haircut.
I Decided to Cut My Own Bangs
Yeah, I know, a haircut isn’t really a necessity. But my bangs were past the tip of my nose and I couldn’t take it anymore. Desperate times called for desperate measures. The rest of my hair can wait, but I really wanted to be able to see properly without scrounging around for bobby pins.
I watched a few YouTube videos, grabbed some hair scissors, took a deep breath, and snipped.
I went REALLY slowly, but the bottom of my bangs are now at an acceptable length. My mom (who would have definitely told me if I screwed up and needed to hide it with bobby pins) said I did a good job (surprisingly enough!).
Then, My Husband Needed a Haircut
This is where things got scary. My husband really needed a haircut for work, but quarantines mean no one is cutting hair. He usually gets one every other week, and it had been over a month. Out of desperation, he purchased some clippers and handed them to me.
I’ve never even touched these things, so I was nervous. I didn’t even know how to use it or set it to the right length, so I asked him to do it. Then he decided to make the first cut.
Shorter Than Anticipated
He didn’t read the instructions, but he thought he set them properly. The first cut was definitely shorter than he would normally choose, but by that point, it was too late. His whole head ended up that length. Oops! Luckily, he had a week to let it grow back in before heading back to work. He also won’t have to worry about another haircut for several weeks. By the time he needs another trim, the professionals should be back in business.
Lessons Learned
If you’re cutting your own hair during quarantine, do what I did and start small. Trim in very small increments, and keep going until you reach the desired length. Don’t take a page from my husband’s book and go all in. You can’t make it longer after that first cut!
