Today’s word of the day is “harvest.”
I grew up about three hours away from my paternal grandparents. We went to see them when we could, but especially around the holidays. They owned a bakery and this was their busiest time of the year.
Road Trips and Wheat Fields
The landscape where I grew up is absolutely not suitable for farming. You dig a few inches and you get rocks and clay – not dirt. Halfway to my grandparents’ house, the landscape would transform from forests and rolling hills to farmland.
As boring as this may sound, watching endless fields of wheat swaying in the wind was incredibly satisfying and peaceful to me. I still love that sight. A little bit of wind and a big wheat field can almost look like ocean waves.
Then The Harvest Comes
A harvest always meant an end of this view. Yes, a harvest meant my beautiful view was gone and the field didn’t look so pretty anymore, but harvests are good and a necessary part of farming and fall. Without plentiful harvests, we would be pretty hungry and we would miss out on some of the best foods.
