Today’s word of the day is “Reveal.”
I have been posting some of my throwback poems recently and have decided to “reveal” WHY I write poetry.
Poetry is one of the easiest and also one of the absolute hardest things I ever write.
Why Writing Poetry is Hard
My poetry has always been dark, introspective, negative, sad… Poetry has never worked for me when my mind is in a good place. Instead, I need to be angry. Depressed. Struggling. If I’m happy, my attempts at poetry always make me roll my eyes and are so cheesy or ridiculous that I can’t help but cringe.
That’s why poetry is hard. I have to be in the “right” (aka wrong) mindset. I have to feel lost.
Unfortunately for my poetry but fortunately for my happiness, I do not write new poems very often anymore. That is why I post so many throwbacks.
Why Writing Poetry is Easy
On the other hand, when I’m in the perfect mindset for writing a poem, I sometimes find I do not even have to try or think about it. I just start typing or writing, and suddenly I have a poem. My best poems were written in less than five minutes. “Shadows” is one of those poems that came to me immediately.
Why I Write Poetry
I write poetry because it is a release. It is a way for me to purge all of that negative energy tumbling around in my head. As soon as I’m done, I go from “Everything is terrible” to “Look what I created!”
Instead of doom and despair, I feel pride and accomplishment.
If you’re feeling down, find something that takes your negative and turns it into a positive. It is an amazing way to make yourself feel better..
